Who was...?
Charles Dickens was born on 7 February 1812, in Portsmouth, England, and shaped the literature of the Victorian era like few other authors. At an early age, young Charles experienced social injustice firsthand: as a child, he was forced to work in a factory while his father was imprisoned for debt. These experiences of poverty and exploitation are powerfully reflected in later novels such as Oliver Twist and David Copperfield.
With A Christmas Carol, Dickens also created one of the most famous Christmas stories in the world. The profound transformation of the cold-hearted Ebenezer Scrooge has been adapted countless times for film, television, theater, and animation. To this day, the story continues to shape our understanding of compassion, social responsibility, and the possibility of personal change.
