Authentic portrait of Leonardo da Vinci by Francesco Melzi

Who was...?

Leonardo da Vinci was one of the most eclectic thinkers of the Renaissance and is still regarded today as the epitome of the universal genius. Born in 1452 in Vinci, a small village in Tuscany, he combined art, science and technology in a truly unique way. His works demonstrate not only extraordinary artistic talent, but also a deep interest in and understanding of the laws of nature, anatomy and perspective.

Today, his most famous works are probably the ‘Mona Lisa’, ‘The Last Supper’ and the ‘Vitruvian Man’. They are widely regarded as milestones in art history. Yet Leonardo da Vinci was far more than a painter. He studied anatomy intensively, conducted detailed studies of the human body and produced precise drawings that were far ahead of their time. His notebooks contain designs for flying machines, bridges, military equipment and hydraulic systems – many of which only became technically feasible centuries later.

His working method was characterised by tireless curiosity. Leonardo da Vinci observed the world with extraordinary precision and constantly asked questions: How do birds fly? How does the human eye work? How can movement and light be depicted? This interdisciplinary way of thinking makes him an inspiring figure in human history to this day.

Although he embarked on many projects and did not complete them all, he left behind an impressive legacy. Leonardo da Vinci embodies the union of creativity and science, the courage to push boundaries, and the conviction that knowledge arises from experimentation and observation. His ideas and works have shaped our understanding of art and innovation to this day.
