Who was...?
Marie Skłodowska Curie was born on 7 November 1867, in Warsaw, Poland, and is one of the most important scientists in our history. She became famous for her research on radioactivity, which would have a lasting influence on modern physics and chemistry.
In 1891, she moved to Paris to study at the Sorbonne. There she met physicist Pierre Curie, with whom she worked closely. Together they discovered the elements polonium and radium. For her groundbreaking research, she received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903 and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911.
However, Marie Curie was not only an outstanding researcher, but also a pioneer for women in science. At a time when women had little access to universities or scientific careers, she prevailed through her extraordinary achievements and perseverance. In fact, she was the first woman ever to receive a Nobel Prize. Later, she also became the first female professor at the Sorbonne.
