Wer war eigentlich... ?
With Faust, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe created one of the most important works of world literature: a drama about striving, knowledge, and the ambivalence of human desires. To this day, it continues to fascinate readers and theater audiences alike. Alongside Faust, novels such as The Sorrows of Young Werther and his numerous poems also testify to his keen powers of observation and a pronounced psychological sensitivity.
Goethe was born on 28 August 1749, in Frankfurt am Main. His life was shaped in particular by his extended journey to Italy and by his friendship with fellow poet Friedrich Schiller. He devoted himself intensively to the study of the natural sciences and to literary exchange in Weimar, where he was active both as a statesman and as a poet.
The depth of his characters and the timeless power of his themes make Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, to this day, a central point of reference for literature, philosophy, and the arts.
